Ralph Eshelman

Dr. Ralph Eshelman was director of the Calvert Marine Museum, Solomons, Maryland, from 1974 to 1990 and is a specialist in maritime history, polar exploration, vertebrate paleontology, and cultural resource management. He received his Ph.D. in 1974 from the University of Michigan with a major in geology and vertebrate paleontology and a minor in ecology. Ralph is a research associate in the Department of Paleobiology at the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution. He is widely published and lectures on maritime and military history, polar exploration, and paleontology. His research has taken him to many parts of the world, including Alaska, Labrador, Netherlands, Antilles, Trinidad and Tobago, and the Falkland Islands. Ralph has served as geologist and historian on expedition cruise ships to the Antarctic, Greenland, Iceland, Labrador, Svalbard, Great Lakes, Canadian Maritime Provinces, Chile, Argentina, western Mediterranean, most of the major island groups of the South Pacific, Ascension, St. Helena, Tristan da Cunha and South Georgia. He is owner of Eshelman & Associates, a cultural resource management, museum consultancy, and lecture and expedition service company.
