Steve Sidebotham

Born into a US military family in Germany. He spent about four and a half years of his childhood in Germany and also lived in Turkey, where he went to high school for two and a half years and where he became hooked on archaeology at the age of 14. He went to university in Egypt for two years and spent a year in Greece (also at university). Steve has traveled widely on six of the seven continents (he is still eager to get to Antarctica!) and, since 1972, has conducted archaeological work (both on land and underwater) in countries on three of them (in Italy, Greece, Tunisia, Libya, Israel, Egypt, Yemen, Jordan, Sudan and India). His major research interest is commercial and cultural relations between the Mediterranean basin and the Red Sea-Indian Ocean littorals from the late fourth century BC until the early seventh century AD. In addition to being an avid photographer, he loves to trek (Mt. Kilimanjaro, Mustang, Mt. Kailash) and SCUBA dive (both for work and play). At the moment Steve is a Professor in the History Department at the University of Delaware where he has taught since 1981.
