Pre-Voyage Extension: Serengeti Safari

Monday, November 24 – Monday, December 1

Tanzania is a land of sweeping landscapes populated by virtually every type of African animal imaginable—lions, leopards, cheetahs, zebras, wildebeest—the list is seemingly endless. Spotting wildlife is our primary goal, and this itinerary includes two destinations noted for their abundance of fauna—Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro Crater. Stay at remote lodges and tented camps to experience true wilderness well off the beaten path.

Monday, November 24, 2014
Depart USA / En route
Board your independent flight to Tanzania.
Tuesday, November 25
Arusha, Tanzania
Arrive at Kilimanjaro Airport and transfer to the Arusha Coffee Lodge for overnight.
Wednesday, November 26
Karatu / Lake Manyara National Park
After breakfast, depart overland for Mto wa Mbu Village. In the market, browse traditional handicrafts that represent over 100 cultural groups. Continue to Lake Manyara National Park and check in to the Plantation Lodge, your base for two nights. Time permitting, join an evening game drive, with dinner at the lodge.
Thursday, November 27
Ngorongoro Highlands
Today, enjoy a full day of exploration with a game drive to the Ngorongoro Highlands for magnificent views of the crater, more than 7,500 feet below. Then descend into the crater, home to some 25,000 animals—zebras, buffalo, antelope, lions, black rhinos, hippos, elephants—attracted by the abundant grazing and groundwater of the crater floor. With luck, you may also encounter the Maasai, who drive their cattle into the crater to graze. Or, choose a walking tour to search for resident birds and wildlife in the vicinity of the lodge.
Friday, November 28
Ngorongoro / Serengeti National Park
Set out overland for the Serengeti and enjoy a picnic lunch in the bush. Make a stop at Olduvai Gorge and visit the small museum to view fossils and artifacts from the area. As the plains of the Serengeti unfurl before you, watch for the Big Five and the numerous predators that are attracted by the abundant game. Arrive at Pioneer Camp, set on a dramatic cliff with sweeping views over the plains. Spacious tents with en suite facilities harken back to the classic safari experience of a bygone era.
Saturday & Sunday, November 29 & 30
Serengeti National Park
Spend two full days exploring the Serengeti on morning and evening game drives. Wildlife viewing in the Serengeti ecosystem with its Great Migration is one of the world’s greatest wildlife highlights. The Serengeti has the highest concentration of large mammals on the planet and is famous for its 2,500 lions, the largest population found anywhere!
Monday, December 1
