Depart on your independent flight to China.
September 6 Beijing, China
Arrive in Beijing and transfer to the luxurious St. Regis Hotel. Gather this evening for a welcome dinner and briefing.
September 7 Beijing
Begin your exploration at Tiananmen Square, the spiritual heart of China. At the City Planning Museum, learn about the challenges of managing a city of nearly 20 million, then head to the Olympic Park for a look at modern Chinese sustainable architecture. Step back in time during a rickshaw ride through the narrow lanes of Beijing’s historic hutong district.
Sep 8 - Sep 9 Xi'an

A highlight of your two-day exploration of Xi’an includes a visit to the museum housing the famous terra cotta warriors—more than 7,000 life-sized soldiers created to guard China’s first emperor in the afterlife. Enjoy a tour of the remarkable Shaanxi Historical Museum, with a special viewing of the Tang Dynasty frescoes and a visit to the Small Wild Goose Pagoda. Shangri-La Hotel
September 10 Lanzhou
After your morning flight to Lanzhou, travel outside the city to the Bingling Grotto. Explore this extensive Buddhist temple complex with statuary and frescoes dating from 420 A.D. including a giant, 88-foot tall Maitreya Buddha that gazes out across a scenic gorge. Continue to the Gansu Provincial Museum to view a unique collection of natural and historic exhibits, including Neolithic Age painted potteries, precious linen and silk fabrics, books, wooden and bronze vessels, and a gravity-defying bronze horse statue dating from approximately 170 A.D. September 11 Dunhuang

Situated on the edge of the Gobi Desert, the oasis of Dunhuang was once an important stop along the Silk Road. View some of the world’s finest examples of Buddhist art spanning a period of 1,000 years—sutras, murals, and sculptures—inside the Mogao Grottoes, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Sep 12 - Sep 13 Urumqi / Turpan

Board your short flight from Dunhuang to Urumqi and view numerous Silk Road artifacts including the famous 3,800-year-old “Sleeping Beauty” mummy at the Xinjiang Regional Museum. Then travel overland to Turpan, and along the way stop to explore the extensive ruins of ancient Jiaohe, destroyed by the Mongols in the 13th century. The next day admire fine Buddhist murals in the Thousand Buddha Caves and visit the ruins of Gaochang, situated at the base of the Flaming Mountains. Sep 14 - Sep 15 Turpan / Urumqi / Kashgar
This morning return to Urumqi and enjoy a shopping expedition to the Uighur Grand Bazaar, where members of one of China’s most colorful ethnic minorities sell handicrafts and produce. An evening flight brings you to Kashgar. Known as the “Pearl on the Ancient Silk Road,” Kashgar’s bazaars are still the focus of daily life. Attend the bustling Sunday market and watch for the dopa hats the city is known for. After the market visit the Abakh Khoja Tomb, constructed in 1640, and Id Kah, the largest mosque in China. Sep 16 - Sep 17 Urumqi / Almaty, Kazakhstan
After a morning at leisure, return to Urumqi for your flight to Almaty, the former capital of Kazakhstan. September 18 Tashkent, Uzbekistan

A former crossroads of Silk Road caravans and invaders, Tashkent is the current capital of Uzbekistan. Discover more than 1,500 years of Uzbek art at the Fine Arts Museum, and spend some time exploring the narrow winding alleys of the old town, with a stop at the medieval-style Abulkassim Madrasah handicraft center. Samarkand, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has long been a crossroads for the world’s cultures. September 23 Tashkent / Urgench / Khiva

Drive to Tashkent and board your flight for Urgench, then transfer to Khiva. Explore the historic center of Khiva, one of the best-preserved cities on the Silk Road. Inside impressive 30-foot walls lie over 50 monuments, as well as hundreds of traditional houses. Sep 24 - Sep 25 Khiva / Tashkent
Your exploration of Khiva continues with tours of Dishan Kala, the outer town, and Ichan Kala, the inner town. A short flight brings you to Tashkent.
