Know Before You Go
Away from its capital, Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia is primitive and little affected by modern trappings. Mongolia’s infrastructure is still in its infancy, and delays and changes to this published itinerary are likely and should be expected. Some days will involve long drives over unpaved roads, which can be strenuous. Despite the occasional delays and sometimes bumpy conditions, this expedition takes you well off the beaten path for a truly authentic taste of Mongolian wilderness. For travelers who delight in natural history, possess a sense of humor, flexibility, and a true spirit of adventure, your time in Mongolia will be remembered for many years to come.
Accommodations are comfortable and clean; they range from well-appointed hotels in the capital to traditional nomadic gers—dome-shaped tents covered by felt and canvas, known perhaps more widely by their Russian name, yurts. Homey and comfortable, gers are heated by wood-burning stoves; most lack en suite facilities, which are usually located in a central building. You will also spend several nights in spacious, two-man tents with plenty of head room, equipped with cots with linens, carpets, and sitting area with chairs. Showers and toilet facilities are located in separate structures.
Please be advised that in Mongolia it will be next to impossible to adhere to a vegetarian diet, though yogurt, cheese, and fermented milk will be available. Meals are hearty and simple; however, fresh vegetables and fruits are naturally in short supply. Temperatures will range from the mid-50s°F to the low-80°F during the day, with temperatures dropping into the low-40s°F at night. To best enjoy your experiences in Mongolia, you should be in good physical condition and able to participate on nature hikes of one or two miles over rough or uneven trails.
