Travel with Zegrahm’s Japan experts, Mark Brazil and Chieko Sakihana, on a brand-new overland adventure that ventures far off the typical tourist path to delve deep into Japan’s unique culture and history. You’ll spend most of this 19-day adventure on the western coast of Honshu Island visiting everything from museums and food shops to local’s homes and traditional businesses to get a true taste of Japanese culture. And, because of Mark and Chieko’s deep-rooted connections in Japan, many of the places you’ll visit are not normally open to the public.
This unique voyage reveals the cultural highlights, natural attractions, and dramatic coastlines of Honshu Island as we sail the Inland Sea. Discover Japan’s rich historic legacy as we explore fabled shrines and temples, magnificent castles and fortresses, superb parks and formal gardens, and elegant pagodas. Visit the ultimately moving Peace Memorial Park in the heart of Hiroshima and photograph the iconic red Torii gate at Miyajima—entrance to a 6th-century Shinto shrine.
Go off the beaten path along the ancient Silk Road through Central Asia, an enigmatic region of rugged mountains and rural backwaters that sits at the very crossroads of civilization. It was here were Marco Polo garnered exotic tales of despotic khans and desert kingdoms, and its former eminence is on display in age-old bazaars and some of the finest Islamic architecture to survive the Middle Ages. Lost for a time behind Soviet rule, today the ‘Stans and their neighboring countries remain as evocative as ever.
