Zegrahm Expeditions Offers Opportunity to Visit the Channel Islands on Liberation Day
Unique Celebration Marks the End of German Occupation During World War II
Seattle, WA (December 5, 2017) – Zegrahm Expeditions, the world leader in small-ship cruises and overland adventures, is offering guests on its 2018 Discoveries of Coastal Europe expedition a unique opportunity to visit the Channel Islands on Liberation Day. Observed in Jersey and Guernsey annually on May 9, the national holiday is a celebration of the end of occupation by Nazi Germany during World War II.
The 2018 holiday will mark the 73rd anniversary of Liberation Day, when the HMS Beagle arrived in Jersey from Plymouth to accept the German surrender. The official ceremonies begin in Liberation Square, where the Harbour Master and two naval officers hoisted the Union Flag after nearly five years of occupation by the Wehrmacht.
After a non-denominational service and flag-raising re-enactment, there will be a parade of vintage and military vehicles, bands, and service organizations. There will also be an official ceremony at the Crematorium, where there is a memorial to victims and slave workers who died during the occupation. In the afternoon, Zegrahm guests will have a chance to attend a lively community celebration in the port town of Saint Helier, which includes live entertainment and food stalls.
The event should prove a highlight of the 14-day Discoveries of Coastal Europe itinerary, which also includes World War II history in Brest and Normandy, UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Spain and France, and wine-tasting and vineyard tours in Bordeaux. Guests will also have an opportunity to tour several WWII bunkers and the German Occupation Museum.
“We are delighted to offer our guests an opportunity to experience the Liberation Day ceremonies and celebrations on Jersey,” said Zegrahm President Van Perry. “Travelers these days are more and more interested in unique, immersive experiences that allow them to explore their passions. And I believe that providing those sorts of expeditions is what we here at Zegrahm do best.”
