Today was the day of arrival for most of us—and for everyone our day to gather as a group. We settled into our two hotels, the Serena and the Park Hyatt, next to each other on the lovely beachfront of Zanzibar’s Stonetown. In the evening we had our welcome dinner and orientation to the next day’s activities by Expedition Leader Brad Climpson and Cruise Director...

We migrated in from places near and far to gather in Ushuaia at the start of our Antarctic adventure. Perched on the hill above the city in our magnificent hotel, Arakur Ushuaia, we gathered for dinner to meet the expedition team and our fellow travelers. We have all made a thousand individual decisions that have gotten us all to this point. Tomorrow we sail toward adventure united. Onward.

Reykjavik, Iceland / Golden Circle / Embark Le Champlain
This morning we began bright and early ferrying our luggage down from our rooms at the Hilton Reykjavik Nordica Hotel. We have the day to explore the countryside with local guides while our ship, Le Champlain, readies in port for our arrival and the voyage ahead.

Bergen, Norway / Embark Ocean Adventurer
Unusually for Bergen, it was a dry, warm and sunny weekend when we arrived here to begin our travels in Wild Norway and Svalbard. Bergen experiences only five rain-free days a year and this was exceptional weather which was being enjoyed to the full by the locals, especially as this was also the Norwegian National Day holiday weekend. We set out on foot early this morning, for a tour...

Ushuaia, Argentina / Embark Island Sky
Having arrived at the Arakur Hotel & Resort in Ushuaia the day before, and caught up on at least some sleep overnight, we set out this morning to explore Tierra del Fuego National Park. Guided by our ornithologist, Jim Wilson, our birders were first out, keen to find their target species, the Magellanic woodpecker. In this they were...

Mahe Island, Seychelles
All fellow travelers arrived safely after seemingly convoluted journeys into the tropical Seychelles, the humidity like a gentle kiss after the dry conditions endured on aircraft. We were met at the airport and transferred to our accommodation at the Eden Bleu Hotel, located on reclaimed land offshore of the main island. Some of us joined one of the excursions on offer, while others simply...

Oslo, Norway / Longyearbyen / Embark Ocean Adventurer
Having gathered for dinner at the Radisson Blu Hotel at the Oslo Airport yesterday and met with our expedition team, this morning we took the short stroll to the airport terminal to join our flight to Svalbard. Four hours later, after a brief stop in Tromsø, we stepped from the plane into the cold damp air of...

Reykjavík, Iceland / Narsarsuaq, Greenland / Embark Hebridean Sky
Having gathered and met our fellow travelers and expedition staff in the Hilton Nordica Hotel in Reykjavík the previous evening, our Greenland to Iceland adventure began today with a tour of the most northerly capital city in the world. We took in views of Reykjavík from atop the hot water tanks of Perlan and visited...

Praia, São Tiago Island, Cape Verde / Embark Island Sky
Our Sea to Sahara adventure began on a warm and sunny day in Praia, the capital of Cape Verde Islands. We enjoyed an excellent lunch of traditional Cabo Verdean dishes in the cozy Quintal da Musica, accompanied by the lively music of a local band before setting out for the old town of Cidade Velha, the former capital, now a...

Today we all converged on this southernmost Argentine city to meet our fellow travelers on our Antarctic adventure. There are roughly 75 of us, plus staff. In the evening we gathered for cocktails, dinner, and a few introductions in a room that afforded a splendid view of the Beagle Channel—our gateway to the Drake Passage and the southern continent.
