Thursday & Friday, September 5 & 6, 2013 - Istanbul, Turkey / Embark Island Sky: Welcome to Istanbul! On arrival at the historic Pera Palace Hotel, some of us opted to unwind in the luxury of this newly renovated landmark. Others chose to relax at a nearby hamman, the ultimate Turkish bath experience, or to set out to explore the city. In the evening we gathered to meet our fellow travelers, some arriving from a pre-extension to Cappadocia in...

Monday, May 6, 2013 - Osaka, Honshu, Japan / Kyoto: Upon arriving at Kansai Airport Osaka, we transferred to Kyoto where we checked in to the elegant Kyoto Hotel Okura.

Tuesday, May 7 - Kyoto: Founded in the 8th century, Kyoto was the capital of Japan and the Emperors’ residence for more than one thousand years. Our wonderful guides—Cheikosan, Mineko-san, and Akiko-san, who would be with us throughout our time in Japan—began our tour at the...

Saturday, February 8, 2014 - Belize City, Belize / Lamanai Ruins / Embark Island Sky: Our adventure began with a visit to the beautiful ancient Mayan site of Lamanai. Leaving our hotel early, we headed north toward Orange Walk where we climbed into powerful motorboats for the exciting 24-mile cruise up the New River.

Lamanai, which means ‘submerged crocodile,’ was first settled around 1500 B.C. Once home to over 20,000 people, the cleared and reconstructed...

Friday, March 8, 2013 - Belize City, Belize: For most of us arriving from colder climates, the weather provided a warm welcome to Belize at our hotel in the historic district, the Radisson Fort George and Marina Hotel. With an afternoon at leisure, some of us settled in and relaxed while other intrepid souls headed off to explore the town. As the sun set we assembled for drinks and hors d’oeuvres hosted by Zegrahm Expeditions and Stanford Travel/Study, and we met some...

Sunday, January 3, 2010 - Belize City, Belize: Welcome to Belize! As we exited the airport and wound our way through the narrow streets of the older parts of Belize City, our first impression was that of moldering wooden shanties lining the streets. Upon closer inspection it becomes apparent that these merely reflect a tropical existence on a hurricane-prone coast.

When we reached our hotel in the historic district, the Radisson Fort George and Marina Hotel,...

Monday, January 6, 2014 - Buenos Aires, Argentina / Ushuaia: Most of us arrived in Buenos Aries and continued on to Ushuaia to join our fellow explorers at the Las Hoyas Hotel. We unpacked and enjoyed a welcome dinner where our Expedition Leader, Russ Evans, and Zegrahm cofounder Peter Harrison greeted us and welcomed us to the trip of a lifetime. After our long day’s traveling, most of us headed for an early bedtime.

Thursday, January 3, 2013 - Buenos Aires, Argentina: After arriving in Buenos Aires earlier this morning, we enjoyed a most welcome buffet at our lovely hotel, the Emperador. We then had the afternoon to either relax or sight-see in this colorful Argentinean capital. In the evening we attended a reception, dinner, and short briefing to prepare us for our adventures to come. Most of us retired early to catch up on as much sleep as possible before our frightfully early...

Saturday, January 14, 2012 - Buenos Aires, Argentina: Don't cry for me, Argentina...as it is with great regret we only had time to quickly meet and pass through your captivating capital of Buenos Aires. Our small group of excited adventurers momentarily added to this autonomous city’s population of about 3 million inhabitants, and just as briefly we had enough time to enjoy its renowned food, wine, and tangos. Though most of us arrived early this morning after long red-eye...

Monday, March 25, 2013 - En Route / Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea: We all converged on the city of Port Moresby from distant reaches of the planet for the same reason: to embark on an expedition to experience the culture, wildlife, and landscapes of Melanesia. We gathered at the Airways Hotel, where we met our fellow adventurers at the welcome cocktail party, followed by dinner.

Quito, Ecuador

Field Report

Wednesday, October 9, 2013 - Quito, Ecuador: Wherever you were coming from, or where your flight originated, it’s a safe bet that when your plane made its descent into Quito, it didn’t have to descend as far as it originally climbed. This is because Quito sits at 9,350 feet, on the lower slopes of the volcano Pichincha. If you were near a window during that descent, your first image of Quito was of a whitewashed colonial-style city with few tall buildings, sprawling across...
