Board your independent flight to Japan.

Kyoto, Japan

May 17

Arrive in Kyoto and transfer to the Kyoto Hotel Okura for a welcome dinner and overnight.  


May 18

Following breakfast at the hotel, set out for a full-day sightseeing tour of lovely Kyoto. Among the tour highlights is a visit to the Heian-jingu Shrine and its gardens, built in 1895 to commemorate the 1100th anniversary of the founding of Kyoto; the 12th-century Sanjusangen-do Temple, housing the Thousand-Armed Kannon; and the exquisite Kiyomizu-dera Temple with its sacred waterfall. Tonight enjoy a traditional shabu shabu dinner with a spectacular private cultural performance.

Kyoto / Nara

May 19

Today visit Nara. Points of interest include Todai-ji Temple, with the great image of Buddha; Kofuku-ji Temple, famous for its pagodas; Kasuga-Taisha Shrine; and Deer Park. After this, take a stroll through town on your own. Savor a special Japanese tempura dinner this evening. Return to our hotel for overnight.


May 20

Spend the day exploring more of Kyoto’s many highlights including the beautiful Kinkaku-ji Temple (Golden Pavilion); the Ryoan-ji Temple with its dry landscape garden; and Nijo Castle, a superb five-building complex and gardens. Return to the hotel for a farewell dinner and overnight.

Kyoto / Niigata / Embark Caledonian Sky

After breakfast, board our train for the ride to Niigata. Meet up with the main group, then embark the Caledonian Sky and set sail for Hokkaido.
