What a swell expedition! Mark provided what we needed for a rare and splended experience in Japan—we learned so much about endemic and migratory wildlife, as well as about Japanese history, culture, and society. We deeply appreciate the insights he shared with us, his grace and patience, and his willingness to ensure a grand expedience for all participants.
Snow Monkeys & Cranes of Japan
- Photograph large flocks of Japanese cranes as they leap, pirouette, and trumpet loudly in dramatic greeting and courting rituals.
- Visit the enchanting village of Shirakawa-go, a World Heritage Site; the tall, gable-roofed Gassho-Zukuri architecture, which literally means “hands folded in prayer,” is unique in Japan.
- Observe the celebrated spectacle of the snow monkeys that visit and soak in the thermal baths of Jigokudani, and enjoy the therapeutic properties of the hot springs at our lodge.
- Search for foxes, deer, and seals on the Shiretoko Peninsula and take a boat trip to the ice edge to feed and photograph mighty Steller’s sea eagles.
