Below please find the day-by-day itinerary for this expedition. Unless otherwise noted, daily excursion options are included in the cost of the trip. We do our best to adhere to the scheduled itinerary, but in the spirit of our expeditionary style of travel we may deviate slightly to take full advantage of encounters with the destination and its people, culture, and wildlife.

Depart USA / Reykjavík, Iceland

June 17June 18

Board your independent flight to Iceland. Arrive in Reykjavík on June 18 and transfer to Hilton Reykjavík Nordica for an afternoon at leisure. Gather this evening for a welcome dinner and briefing.

Reykjavík / Kirkjubæjarklaustur

June 19
Ultimate Iceland

Today, visit the beautiful Seljalandsfoss Waterfall, where it is possible to stand behind the cascade of water as it plummets over a sheer cliff for a unique perspective. Next, visit the Skógarfoss Waterfall, one of the largest in the country, with a width of 82 feet and a 200 foot drop. Make a stop at a museum featuring a turf farm and other traditional buildings for a look at Icelandic life in the past. Enjoy lunch in the small village of Vik and take a stroll along the stunning black sand beach, backed by sheer cliffs and punctuated by dramatic columns of basalt. Continue on to Kirkjubæjarklaustur, which has been continuously inhabited since the original settlement period. Visit the Systrafoss Waterfall and hike to a lovely viewpoint. Return to Kirkjubæjarklaustur for dinner and overnight at Hotel Klaustur.

Kirkjubæjarklaustur / Jökulsárlón / Höfn

Jökulsárlón, Iceland

After breakfast, head to Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon, one of Iceland‘s most popular attractions. Cruise among huge blocks of element-sculpted ice that have calved from the glacier, and keep watch for seals and Arctic terns. After this, take an exciting hike on the Breiðarmerkurjökull Glacier. Continue to Höfn and check in to the Fosshótel Vatnajökull for dinner and overnight.

Höfn / Seydisfjördur

Drive along the eastern coast to the Fossárdalur Valley, an amazingly scenic area where over 30 waterfalls of various shapes and sizes cascade down the valley’s mountainous walls. After a hike through this natural wonderland, transfer to the colorful fishing town of Seydisfjördur, and check in to Hotel Aldan for dinner and overnight.

Seydisfjördur / Skálanes

Whooper Swans

Skálanes is a private nature reserve and heritage center set in the East Fjords region. Dramatic snowcapped mountains, waterfalls, vast sea cliffs, vibrant meadows, and secluded sandy beaches make this a nature lover’s paradise. The area is home to 47 different species of birds, including eider ducks, black-tailed godwits, red-necked phalarops, and gyrfalcons.Return to Hotel Aldan for dinner and overnight. 

Seydisfjördur / Lake Mývatn

Lake Mývatn, Iceland

Today, head to the northern part of Iceland, with a stop en route at the mighty Dettifoss Waterfall, which has the greatest water volume in Europe. In the Lake Mývatn region, observe the powerful forces of nature at work—a dramatic landscape of labyrinthine lava formations, seething sulphur pits, and boiling mud pools. Oasis-like Lake Mývatn is one of the world’s richest birdlife areas, and supports enormous numbers of breeding ducks and whooper swans. Check in to Hotel Laxá for dinner and overnight. 

Lake Mývatn / Akureyri

Go on a hike in the Lake Mývatn region, then take some time to unwind at Mývatn Nature Baths. With a unique blend of minerals and silicates, the warm, soothing waters benefit both the skin and the spirit. After lunch, make a stop at Goðafoss, “Waterfall of the Gods.” Continue to friendly Akureyri, Iceland’s second-largest city, and check in to Icelandair Hotel Akureyri for dinner and overnight. 

Akureyri / Siglufjördur / Reykjavìk / USA

June 25
Siglufjördur, Iceland

After breakfast, drive to the idyllically-situated village of Siglufjördur, once the undisputed herring fishing capital of the Atlantic. Today’s highlight is a visit to the Herring Era Museum, the largest maritime museum in Iceland and a former winner of European Museum of the Year. Return to Akureyri for our flight to Reykjavík and connect with your independent homeward flight, arriving in the USA the same day; or, join our group on The Untamed North: Greenland to Iceland
